October 18th, 2023 – Bradley Foster & Sargent

Tonight, we were joined by Bradley Foster & Sargent, an investment advisory firm in Hartford, CT with five other offices around the east coast and Chicago. They discussed the CFA designation, the asset management industry, finding clients and fostering client relationships, strategy, and more throughout the meeting. We were also joined by three current BFS Fall interns who recapped their experiences thus far and highlighted what they have learned as equity research analysts. As always, the audience had the opportunity to ask questions to gain further insight into the asset management industry and recruiting opportunities. It is always a pleasure to host BFS!

October 11th, 2023 – FED Challenge Meeting

During the meeting, attendees first gathered to listen to an insightful Fed Challenge presentation delivered by five students who elaborated on their recommendations for the Federal Reserve’s upcoming strategy. This was followed by a dynamic Q&A, where participants actively discussed and probed the students’ ideas. Additionally, the meeting marked the initiation of our mentorship program, as mentors introduced themselves to their respective mentees. Subsequently, participants grouped up and initiated high-level introductory discussions to set the stage for their mentorship journey.

October 4th, 2023 – Travelers & The Current Events Committee

We had the privilege of hosting Travelers representatives tonight who shared insights about their dynamic business, including the innovative Finance Leadership Development Program. They presented an overview of diverse insurance products, core functions, and company success strategies. The discussion also emphasized the sought-after qualities in potential collaborators and highlighted the FLDP program, promoting industry rotation and skill diversification for internships and full-time roles. Additionally, this evening marked our first current events discussion, featuring macroeconomic events, notable market trends, and significant market narratives. The meeting concluded with an engaging Q&A session, providing attendees with deeper insights into the latest and most relevant financial news

September 27th, 2023 – Moody’s

Tonight, we had the privilege of a virtual visit from Moody’s, during which they presented an overview of their services and provided a detailed walkthrough of an associate analyst’s typical day. This event offered valuable insights into career pathways, in-depth information about the recruitment process, and firsthand experiences from recent UCONN alumni. We also discussed the core principles of the business, including credit ratings and the rating process. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, allowing Finance Society members to gain a deeper understanding of the company’s mission and receive valuable interview tips.

September 20th, 2023 – Citigroup

This evening, we were delighted to be joined by UConn Alumni from Citigroup. To kick off our semester of guest speakers, these alumni helped familiarize us with the firm and the opportunities for UConn students. They delved into the company’s business model and organizational structure while providing invaluable insights into recruitment and expectations for prospective employees. Following the presentation, we held a brief Q&A and networking session. Questions allowed students to gain a better understanding of life as a Citi employee, as well as the next steps for summer analyst positions.

Tonight, students filled School of Business Room 106 for this year’s introductory Finance Society meeting. President Tom Drumm and Vice President Carolyn Cumello kicked off the night by recapping Finance Society’s mission; to provide insights and knowledge about the vast finance industry through weekly meetings, internal and external events, and the mentorship program. Joined by the Executive Board, they discussed their initiatives and schedule for the semester. This year, the E-Board would like to emphasize member participation and is committed to giving members a fruitful and educational experience. Whether you’re a seasoned financier or beginning to explore the world of finance, the Finance Society strives to provide you valuable information, resources, and a supportive community to help you succeed. Our final meeting of the semester was done virtually over Zoom. We were grateful to have Shap Smith, a Managing Director at Citi, join us. Shap discussed the major trends he’s seen so far in banking and other major industries such as oil, gas, airlines, retail, and more. He discussed what we might see in the future: bankruptcies, companies restructuring their balance sheets, and more.

Our third virtual meeting of the semester was done over Zoom. We were grateful to have Keith LaRose, a Principal and Executive Vice President at Bradley, Foster & Sargent join us. He shared with us how the firm is tackling the challenges that have arisen in the asset management industry as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today we held our first virtual meeting via Zoom! A UConn School of Business alum, who is currently an Investment Banking Analyst at BNP Paribas in NYC, discussed the credit shock that’s risen as a result of the rapid spread of COVID-19. The pandemic has been having detrimental consequences across every asset class.
