Finance Society members gathered today to view first round of presentations from the Spring 2019 Internal Stock Pitch Competition. Five teams of UConn students worked over the course of several weeks and presented in front of several senior finance students. This competition was one of the most successful in the quality of work that students had put forward. Please join us this coming Wednesday April 10, 2019 to view the final round of pitches where guest judges will be deciding the final ranking of the teams.

March 13, 2019

On Wednesday March 13, 2019, three members of the society’s executive board presented on current events within the market. The discussion led by Junior Andrew Blackmore and Sophomores Jack Rupff and Sam Berkun analyzed topics ranging from recent events that have shook the market including the recent event surround Boeing’s 737 Max 8, recent IPOs, and more. The presentation was followed by discussions involving interest rates and other topics within the presentation.

Finance Society hosted Citigroup this past Wednesday, where Managing Director Shapleigh Smith presented to students on the firm and its program. The presentation covered areas including the structure of Citi as a firm, an introduction to capital markets, and an overview of the internship program and timeline. Students were then able to ask questions related to the program, the industry, and the markets.

Today senior Matt Arons presented to the finance society on the importance of the Federal Reserve and the importance of its actions and decisions in the economy, in finance, and more. Matt covered topics ranging from the structure of the Federal Reserve to how the Federal Reserve is able to manage the United States’ monetary supply using different tools at their disposal. The presentation led to an engaging conversation centered around ideas and items brought forward during the presentation.

Seniors Matt and Alana led the organization in a Resume and Interview Workshop on February 20 2019. Students learned about key aspects of their resume to focus on and how to better sell themselves to employers. Matt and Alana presented on careers within the financial industry and the different areas that students may look to seek out careers. The presentation went over different aspects of the interview process that were important for students.

Finance Society hosted a current events discussion on Wednesday February 13, 2019. Juniors Andrew Blackmore and Daniel Parzych lead the discussion and presented on recent market news including the merger between BB&T and SunTrust as well as Brexit and other news.

We hope everyone has had an enjoyable semester so far. For our first week back from winter break, Finance Society had the opportunity to host speakers from both United Technologies and Prudential Financial. Both firms spoke to students about different programs and internship opportunities that were being offered through their firms.

To end the semester, Finance Society hosted a movie screening of The Big Short. Members were able to enjoy the movie while also learning about the 2008 housing bubble and financial crisis throughout the timeline of the movie. We hope everyone has a great rest of their semester and a happy break.

Finance Society hosted their annual stock pitch competition this Wednesday. Three teams of University of Connecticut students presented on their companies of choice. All three teams were very knowledgeable and performed at a high level this night.
